ME 2013

Diane Mannion, ME 2013, 6x6" oil on Gessobord

SELF-PORTRAITS

Disclaimer:  I am much younger, thinner, and gorgeous than portrayed in this article!

Over the past five years or so... I've tortured myself by doing a few self-portraits.  The most recent was worked from an iPhoto snapshot self-taken under the bathroom skylight, thus the early morning puffy-eyed maniacal expression.   John thinks this painting looks like my mother (who is not a maniac, but a sweet and lovely woman).  I think it looks more like my grandmother, sigh.
Here's a collection of ME self-portraits from 2008-2013:
One thing I've noticed while viewing these all together... I'm happiest now!

  1. That's an awesome, AWESOME portrait! I am so impressed with the way you used the colors throughout so effectively, and the way you gave yourself your own personality! Honestly, looking at these today... I think I finally understand why "they" always say it's important for every artist to draw his own self-portrait... I GET it now. To use your own sense of expression to paint something that literally conveys your own expression... that would be a challenge, I think! You've done it beautifully every time! Congratulations, Diane, you're an incredible artist with a beautiful face and personality to match!

  3. I love it!!! I also love doing self portraits and learn so much from each one. I love the play of light and shadow on your self portraits. YOu are a master with shadows!.

  4. Thanks, Maria! My mother hates it, told me to paint another right away. She said it looks like the morning after a wild party (which it might have been). And my husband doesn't like it either. But I think it's a darn good painting.

  5. Beautiful portrait! I love each one and it is so interesting to see you at different stages of your life. It would be hard for me to pick a favorite, but I do love the one painted last year with your hat!

  6. Thank you, Linda! Self-portraits are painful... honesty is tough. Left out lots of wrinkles.

  12. I can see it too, how your level of happiness grew in this time span. You caught every nuance of how you were feeling with each portrait. I do love the most recent one, I look at it from time to time, it is very memorable. I can honesty say that several of the most beautiful people I have ever seen had this same lovely coloring as you do in this painting and it is ageless beauty.
