Beach Grass

Diane Mannion, Beach Grass, 8x10" oil on linen

This painting was a DAILYPAINTWORKS FB pick of the day!

The Boca Grande Invitational last weekend was fabulous!  60 artists and fine weather...  although a bit hot!  My sales were excellent with commissions and other exciting prospects lined up!  This show will be an annual tradition for me.  And the best part was talking to so many wonderful people.

Loved it when a little girl with chocolate ice cream smeared cheeks touched a painting with her chocolate coated finger!  "Daddy, buy this!" she said.  "It looks just like Grandma!"  And he did.

My exhibit with plein air equipment:

Thumbnail sketch:

Stage 1: Underpainting with transparent red oxide, started background.

Stage 2: Worked darks and lights into grasses and sand.

Stage 3: Worked purples and blues into shadows, highlights on sand.

The final:  Didn't stick with my value study...
turned into a different painting.  But that's OK.
Will do another version of stage 3 because I like it.

This is a beautiful painting, and that's so interesting to read about how your thought process evolved throughout, and how you made changes to the original plan as you neared the final stages. That shows your experience as an artist, I'd say! Thanks for a great post!

Thank you, Katherine! This painting had a colorful mind of its own! Not at all what I had in mind. I'm glad you liked my post.

This is the neatest demo. Very dramatic lighting both ways. I love the way you followed your instincts and illuminated the fronds with sunlight. Interesting how the foreground shadow pattern works both ways. You are such a good artist Diane and your set up would draw me in.

Thank you for your glowing comment, Julie. And coming from an artist like you makes me blush!

I wish you had told me you were displaying, I would have been there! Your tent looked perfect and I mean PERFECT! I'm so glad to hear you got commissions and had good sales! Boca is a great place! Congrats all the way around!

I'll make sure you know next year... hope it will become a tradition. Was awfully hot but worth it. Thanks for visiting my blog, Kathleen.
