Painting Light

That certain moment when the sun hits at just the right angle...   I'm most interested in capturing that dramatic play of light, shadows, and reflections that happens in a few seconds.  For me, a push and pull between values and colors.  Should I darken the value but lose the color?  Or let it fall somewhere in between a tonalist or impressionist interpretation?  Sometimes, we have to forget the rules and simply paint.  I'm happy with this one!

It's beautiful. I don't think it's a matter of 'forgetting' the rules... I think you have them ingrained in your mind and they help you to paint with good technique and make good decisions during the process, but you didn't let the rules take over your interpretation of what you were seeing. You stayed true to the first impression that attracted you to the subject and conveyed that beautifully in your painting. That's a true artist, my friend! The sunlight as the main feature in this scene is gorgeous!

Katherine, Thank you for your thoughtful comment. It means a lot to me. Sometimes, when painting it's difficult to turn off the "chatter" or teaching voice. Loved it when Dreama Tolle Perry said, "When you study, study. When you paint...PAINT."

I think this is incredibly lovely. I don't know what rules you didn't follow but if you have some that don't apply to this painting, get out a big black magic marker and X them out. This is wondrous. Dreama would be jealous.

Wow! Thanks for your wonderful comment, Carol! Heard Dreama's toasty and warm in the Keys.
