COCONUT PALM STUDY #1
oil on panel
6" x 4"

Coconut Palm at Fisherman's Village, Punta Gorda. So many shapes and colors in a coconut palm... it's like a party's going on, especially on a breezy day with everything swaying.

ART
oil on panel
5" x 7"

Now that I've uploaded this, I see something to change tomorrow. Just pretend the pipe isn't dead center of the Norfolk Island Pine Tree! Another one from Matlacha... what a place.

MATLACHA FISH SELLERS
oil on panel
5" x 7"

This building had been repainted so often it looked like an abstract painting. Even the old signs were works of art. Loved the blues. Loved the red hose which matched a red sign hidden behind the concrete block shelf over on the right. Earlier, someone wondered if the men were starting a barbecue, turned out they were just burning weeds and fireants with a blow torch connected to the propane tank.
Top version with new additions. Went by the place a week later and the men had a red cooler (great addition color-wise) and a sign, "crabs, fish, oysters." The sign was across the street but I painted it on the porch instead.

CAFE RUELLE ALLEY

Chilly morning! Painted with Visual Arts Center Plein Air Group in Punta Gorda.

BLUE MAILBOX
oil on panel
6" x 4"

Another Matlacha painting. Love the colors there. The numbers on the mailbox were faded and weather worn. Seemed like a one had tilted and a two had turned into a question mark. Perfect for this town.

Back view of Hermitage, Manasota Key. Quick study... flies were biting!

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Painted at the Powel Crosley Estate in Sarasota today. One of those rare plein air paintings that didn't need to be tinkered with when I got home. Good group of painters there, Plein Air Sun Coast, PASC.

KOI STUDY #1
oil on panel
4 1/2" x 4 1/2"

Quick sketch using layers of thin paint on panel with thick gesso. Worked first layers almost like watercolor and lifted highlights. Like how the brush stroke marks of the gesso show through. Koi are fun to paint. This one is from a reference photo I shot at Selby Gardens in Sarasota. First the pond bottom is painted, then the koi and its shadow, next sky and reflections on the water surface, then the floating leaf. Selby's pond bottom was murky mud, I cleaned it up a bit and added pebbles.

IRON OX
oil on canvas panel
8" x 10"

OK. John said this was one of the worst paintings I ever did and I have to agree with him, but I loved painting out at the end of the dock. A three hour painting for ARTsensation, Charlotte Harbor, Punta Gorda, FL.
